Grade 1 · Unit 1: Number and place value

Skip counting

Count in 2s, 5s and 10s – much faster!

Sandals come in pairs, so we can count them in 2s.

Things come in pairs

Shoes, socks and eyes come in pairs. To count pairs, count in 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8. This is called skip counting.

Counting in 5s

We can count fingers in 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20. On a hundred square, the 5s make two straight columns. They always end in 5 or 0.

Counting in 10s

Count in 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. Each jump adds one more ten. The ones digit stays the same.

Patterns in skip counting

Counting in 2s gives 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 … These are multiples of 2. What is the missing number? It is 14.
