How many more? How many fewer?

Who has more?

Sami scored 12 runs. Nila scored 7 runs. Who scored more? How many more? We find the difference.

Line them up

Line up two groups to compare them. Match each red with a blue. The ones without a partner show the difference.

Count on to find the difference

Start at the smaller number, 7. Count on to 12: that is 5 jumps. The difference between 7 and 12 is 5.

Difference is subtraction

We can also subtract: 12 − 7 = 5. Sami scored 5 more runs. Nila scored 5 fewer runs.
