Grade 1 · Unit 1: Number and place value
Add by counting on from the bigger number.

Rina has 8 mangoes. Her uncle gives her 3 more. How many does she have now? We can add to find the total.
Start at 8. Say “8” in your head. Count on 3 more: 9, 10, 11. So 8 + 3 = 11.
For 2 + 9, start at the bigger number, 9. Count on 2: 10, 11. 2 + 9 and 9 + 2 give the same answer.
8 + 5: 8 needs 2 more to make 10. Split 5 into 2 and 3. 8 + 2 = 10, and 10 + 3 = 13. This is the make ten trick.
9 is nearly 10. To add 9, add 10, then take away 1. 24 + 9: 24 + 10 = 34, then 34 − 1 = 33. To add 11, add 10 and then 1 more.
