Graphs

Choose the best graph for your data.

Newspapers show data in graphs.

Graphs in the news

Newspapers use graphs to show information quickly. You can make graphs from your own data. Every graph needs a title and labels.

Pictographs with a key

With big numbers, one symbol can stand for several. Here 🧒 = 3 learners. Bus: 3 symbols × 3 = 9 learners.

Bar graphs with a scale

Label both axes. Choose a scale that fits the biggest number. Estimate values between the scale marks.

Which graph?

Pictographs are easy to read. Bar graphs make comparing easy. Tally charts are for collecting, not presenting.

Line graphs

A bean plant grew 2, 5, 9, 12 and 14 cm over 5 weeks. A line graph joins the points to show growth. Check the scale: here each line is 2 cm. A different scale changes how steep the line looks.
