Grade 3 · Unit 8: Location and transformation
Translate and rotate shapes on a grid.

To fit a jigsaw piece you slide it and turn it. In maths these are translations and rotations. The shape itself never changes size.
A translation is a slide. Every square moves 4 right and 2 up. Describe it as: 4 right, 2 up.
A rotation turns a shape around a point. Say the amount of turn and the direction. Quarter turn = 90°, half turn = 180°.
Some shapes look the same after part of a turn. A square looks the same after a quarter turn. This is called rotational symmetry.
