Grade 2 · Unit 5: Using units of measurement

Perimeter

How far is it all the way round?

A pond in a park. The distance all the way round it is its perimeter.

Around the pond

Ducks swim in a pond with a path round it. How far is it to walk all the way round? That distance is the perimeter.

Add the sides

Count the units along each side. Add them all: 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14. The perimeter is 14 units.

Measure with a ruler

Measure each side with a ruler in centimetres. Start at 0 every time. A square with 6 cm sides: 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24 cm.

Draw a rectangle

Draw a line 5 cm long with a ruler. Draw 2 cm sides at each end, at square corners. Join the ends. Perimeter: 5 + 2 + 5 + 2 = 14 cm.
