Grade 2 · Unit 5: Using units of measurement

Reading scales and thermometers

Read the marks between the numbers.

Cooks measure ingredients with jugs and scales.

Measuring in the kitchen

A cook measures rice, water and spices. Jugs and scales have marks called a scale. Some marks have numbers; some do not.

Halfway marks

This jug has marks every 250 ml. The water is at the third mark: 750 ml. Count the steps between numbered marks.

Hot and cold

A thermometer measures temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). Each mark here is 5 degrees. A warm day in Dhaka might be 30 °C; a cool winter night 12 °C.

Long and very short

A millimetre is tiny: 10 mm make 1 cm. A kilometre is long: 1000 m make 1 km. Choose the unit that fits what you measure.

Solving measuring problems

Read the problem. What unit is it in? Choose add or take away. Always write the unit in your answer.
