Sharing a bag
A bag has 12 sweets. Half of them are for Nila. How many is half of 12?
Half of a group
To find ½, split into 2 equal groups. 12 ÷ 2 = 6. So ½ of 12 = 6.
A quarter and a third
To find ¼, split into 4 equal groups: 12 ÷ 4 = 3. To find ⅓, split into 3 equal groups: 12 ÷ 3 = 4. The denominator tells you how many groups.
Fractions on a number line
Fractions are numbers too. They sit between 0 and 1 on a number line. ½ is halfway; ¼ is halfway to ½.
