Equal parts have special names.

When we cut food to share, the pieces should be equal. Each equal part is a fraction of the whole. Fractions have names: halves, thirds, quarters.
2 equal parts: each is a half (½). 4 equal parts: each is a quarter (¼). Two quarters make a half.
3 equal parts: each is a third (⅓). The bottom number tells how many equal parts. The top number tells how many we are talking about.
Parts must be equal in size to be fractions. Two quarters (2/4) cover the same space as one half. More parts means each part is smaller.
