Grade 2 · Unit 2: Fractions

Equal fractions and adding fractions

Different fractions can be the same amount.

Brownies cut into equal pieces.

Sharing a chocolate bar

A chocolate bar has 10 equal pieces. Mina eats 5 pieces. That is 5/10 of the bar. It is also half of the bar!

Equal fractions

These bars all have the same amount shaded. So ½, 2/4 and 5/10 are equivalent. Also 1/5 = 2/10.

Which is bigger?

For unit fractions, a bigger denominator means a smaller piece. ⅓ < ½ because thirds are smaller than halves. With the same denominator, compare the tops: ¾ > ¼.

Adding fractions

1 fifth + 2 fifths = 3 fifths. Add the tops; the bottom stays the same. Taking away works too: 4/5 − 1/5 = 3/5.

A fraction is a sharing

½ of 10 is 10 ÷ 2 = 5. ¼ of 12 is 12 ÷ 4 = 3. ¾ of 12 is 3 groups of 3 = 9.
