Grade 2 · Unit 1: Number and place value

Odd, even and ordinal numbers

Sort numbers and put them in order.

A house number plate. In many streets, even numbers are on one side and odd numbers on the other.

House numbers

On many streets, one side has even house numbers. The other side has odd numbers. Let us learn to spot them quickly.

Odd or even?

Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9. We can sort numbers with two rules in a Venn diagram.

Skip-counting makes multiples

Count in fives: 5, 10, 15, 20 … These are multiples of 5. Multiples of 10 always end in 0. Multiples of 2 are the even numbers.

First, second, third …

Ordinal numbers tell the position in a line or a race. 21 children run a race. The last one is 21st. Cardinal numbers tell how many: 21 children.

Next-door numbers

Next-door numbers come one after the other, like 7 and 8. One is odd and one is even, so their total is always odd. Which two next-door numbers make 25? 12 and 13!
