Telling time

O’clock and half past.

Clocks around us

Clocks tell us the time. We use time to know when to go to school, eat and sleep. A clock face has the numbers 1 to 12.

O’clock

The short hour hand points to 3. The long minute hand points to 12. It is 3 o’clock.

Half past

Now the minute hand points to 6. It has gone halfway round the clock. It is half past 3. The hour hand is between 3 and 4.

Digital clocks

A digital clock shows the time in numbers. 7:30 means half past 7. 7:00 means 7 o’clock.

Quarter past and quarter to

When the long hand points to 3, it is quarter past. When it points to 9, it is quarter to the next hour. Quarter past 2 is 2:15 on a digital clock.
