Grade 1 · Unit 1: Number and place value
Two the same makes a double.

A butterfly has two wings that match. If one wing has 3 spots and the other has 3 spots, that is 3 + 3 = 6. Adding two numbers that are the same is a double.
Double 1 is 2. Double 2 is 4. Double 5 is 10 – like two hands of fingers. Doubles are always even numbers!
6 + 7 is nearly a double. Double 6 is 12. Add one more: 13. This is a near double trick.
We can double tens and fives too. Double 10 is 20. Double 15 is 30. Double 25 is 50. Doubling is the opposite of finding half.
