Adding and subtracting fractions

Same denominator first.

Recipes

A recipe needs ½ cup of milk and ¾ cup of water. How much liquid altogether? We add fractions.

With like fractions, add the numerators. The denominator stays the same. 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5.

Change to a common denominator first. ½ = 2/4. 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4. 5/4 = 1¼ cups.

Change to sixths: ⅓ = 2/6. 5/6 − 2/6 = 3/6. Simplify: 3/6 = ½.
