Grade 4 · Unit 2: Fractions and decimals

Decimals: tenths and hundredths

Fractions in place value.

Rulers and tapes show parts of a metre: centimetres and millimetres.

Measuring height

Nila is 1.35 m tall. The digits after the decimal point show parts of a metre. 1.35 m = 1 m and 35 cm.

Tenths and hundredths

The first place after the point is tenths. The second place is hundredths. 1.35 = 1 + 3/10 + 5/100.

Hundredths on a grid

A 10 × 10 grid shows 100 hundredths. 35 squares = 0.35. This is also 35 percent (35%).

Comparing decimals

Compare the tenths first, then the hundredths. 0.5 > 0.35 because 5 tenths > 3 tenths. 0.3 = 0.30, which is less than 0.35.
