More than one equal part.

A pizza is cut into 8 equal slices. Rahim eats 3 slices. He ate 3/8 of the pizza.
The denominator (8) says how many equal parts. The numerator (3) says how many parts we have. ⅛ is a unit fraction; 3/8 is three of them.
With unit fractions, a bigger denominator means a smaller part. If the denominators are the same, compare the numerators: 3/5 > 2/5.
These bars all have the same amount shaded. ½, 2/4 and 4/8 are equivalent. Multiply the top and bottom by the same number to find more.
