Graphs and what they tell us

Pictographs and bar graphs answer questions.

Cricket fans at a stadium. Which sport do most children like best?

Reading graphs

Graphs show data as pictures or bars. You can compare amounts at a glance. Always read the title, the labels and the key.

Pictographs with a key

In this pictograph, one ball = 2 children. Cricket has 5 balls: 5 × 2 = 10 children. Always read the key!

Bar graphs with a scale

The scale goes 0, 2, 4, 6 … Read across from the top of each bar. Cricket is the favourite.

Asking questions

Compare bars by subtracting. Add all the bars to find the total. Write a sentence about what you found.

Frequency tables

A frequency table shows how many of each. Data can be shown as a list, a table, a tally, a pictogram or a bar graph. In a pictogram one symbol can stand for 2, 5 or even 10.
