Half and quarter turns

Turn clockwise or anticlockwise.

Things that turn

Wheels, fans and door handles turn. A full turn brings you back to the start. We can also make half and quarter turns.

Quarter turns

A quarter turn is a right angle. It is like the corner of a book. Four quarter turns make a full turn.

Half turns

A half turn is two quarter turns. If you face the door and make a half turn, you face the back wall.

Clockwise or anticlockwise?

Clockwise is the way clock hands move. Anticlockwise is the other way. From 12 to 3 is a quarter turn clockwise.

Right angles

A quarter turn makes a right angle, like the corner of a book. Compare angles: smaller than, equal to or larger than a right angle. Two right angles make a straight line – a half turn.
