Grade 2 · Unit 7: Location and transformation

Slides and flips

Move a shape without changing it.

Mountains and trees reflected in a still lake.

Reflections in water

Still water acts like a mirror. The reflection is a flip of the real thing. In maths, shapes can slide and flip too.

Slides

A slide moves a shape along. The shape does not turn or flip. This shape slid 4 squares right.

Flips

A flip turns a shape over a mirror line. The flipped shape faces the other way. A butterfly’s wings show a flip.

Symmetry

A shape has symmetry when both halves match. Fold along the line: the halves match exactly. Can you finish the other half?

Turning shapes

A slide moves a shape. A flip mirrors it. A turn rotates it. Turn a letter L a quarter turn: it points a new way. Look for slides, flips and turns in patterns around you.
