Measuring time

How long does a journey take?

Journeys take time

A ferry across a big river can take a long time. A walk to the shop takes minutes. Duration is how long something lasts.

Seconds, minutes, hours

60 seconds = 1 minute. 60 minutes = 1 hour. 24 hours = 1 day.

From start to end

A cricket game starts at 2:00 and ends at 4:30. Count the hours: 3:00, 4:00 = 2 hours. Then 30 more minutes. Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes.

Timing an activity

Break starts at 10:15. It lasts 30 minutes. It ends at 10:45.

Reading a timetable

A timetable shows when things start and end. Maths starts at 8:30 and ends at 9:15: it lasts 45 minutes. A time is a moment; a time interval is how long something lasts.
