Mass: kilograms

How heavy is a bag of rice?

Rice by the kilo

Rice is sold by the kilogram (kg). A family may buy 5 kg of rice at a time. Kilograms measure mass.

Reading a scale

Look where the pointer stops. This scale shows 3 kg of potatoes. Read the number carefully.

Grams for light things

Light things are measured in grams (g). 1 kg = 1000 g. 500 g is half a kilogram.

Comparing mass

A balance compares two masses. Here 4 mangoes balance 1 kg. So each mango is about 250 g.
