Grade 2 · Unit 5: Using units of measurement
How long? How much surface?

Tiles cover a floor with no gaps or overlaps. The amount of surface covered is the area. Length tells how long; area tells how much surface.
Count the squares inside the shape. 3 rows of 4 = 12 squares. The area is 12 square units.
Shapes can look different and have the same area. The blue and red shapes both cover 6 squares. Count carefully!
Estimate the length of a book: maybe 10 cm? Measure with a ruler: 12 cm. Your estimates get better with practice.
