Grade 2 · Unit 1: Number and place value
Share fairly or make equal groups.

12 oranges are shared between 3 children. Everyone wants a fair share. Sharing equally is dividing.
Share the oranges one at a time. Each child gets 4. 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
Now we group: put 3 eggs in each box. We fill 5 boxes. 15 ÷ 3 = 5.
Multiplication and division are linked. This array shows 4 × 5 = 20. It also shows 20 ÷ 4 = 5 and 20 ÷ 5 = 4.
Division is like taking away the same number again and again. From 15, take away 3 five times to reach 0. So 15 ÷ 3 = 5. Numbers that divide 15 exactly are 1, 3, 5 and 15.
