Grade 2 · Unit 1: Number and place value

Hundreds, tens and ones

How do three digits make a number up to 999?

Buses, houses and roads have numbers that can be in the hundreds.

Big numbers around us

A bus route can be number 120. A school can have 450 learners. Numbers like these have three digits. Each digit has a job, depending on its place.

Hundreds, tens and ones

10 ones make 1 ten. 10 tens make 1 hundred. Here there are 2 hundreds, 4 tens and 6 ones. Together they make 246.

We say “two hundred and forty-six”.

Each digit has a place

This is place value. The 2 is in the hundreds place, so it is worth 200. We can write 246 = 200 + 40 + 6. This is the expanded form.

Zero holds a place

In 305 there are no tens. The 0 keeps the tens place empty, so the 3 stays in the hundreds place. Without the zero, 305 would become 35!
