Grade 1 · Unit 8: Data representation and interpretation

Representing data

Collect answers and show them clearly.

Children putting up their hands to answer a question.

Asking a question

What is our class’s favourite fruit? We can ask everyone. This is a survey. The answers are data.

Tally marks

Make a tally mark for each answer. Every fifth mark crosses the other four. Then you can count in 5s.

Pictographs

A pictograph uses pictures to show data. Here each face is one child. The longest row shows the favourite.

Bar graphs

A bar graph uses bars instead of pictures. The taller the bar, the more votes. Mango is the class favourite!
