Grade 1 · Unit 1: Number and place value

Arrays and times tables

Rows and columns help us count fast.

A baking tray has neat rows of cups.

Rows everywhere

Cakes in a tray sit in neat rows. Equal rows and columns make an array. Arrays help us count quickly.

Count the rows

This array has 2 rows of 5. 5 + 5 = 10. We can say 2 lots of 5 is 10: 2 × 5 = 10.

Count in fives

Count the fingers in fives: 5, 10, 15. 3 lots of 5 is 15. Counting in equal jumps is a times table.

The 2, 5 and 10 tables

The 2 table counts in twos. The 5 table ends in 5 or 0. The 10 table always ends in 0.

Solve it

Each rickshaw has 3 wheels. How many wheels on 4 rickshaws? Count in threes: 3, 6, 9, 12. There are 12 wheels.
