Grade 3 · Unit 5: Investigating materials

Testing materials

Which paper towel soaks up the most water? Test it!

Different paper towels look similar – but which is the best?

Asking a question

Scientists investigate to answer questions. Which paper towel is the most absorbent? Which fabric is the most waterproof? First, predict what you think will happen.

Planning a fair test

Change only one thing: the type of paper towel. Keep everything else the same: the size of the towel, the amount of water and the time. Decide what to measure – for example, how much water is left in the cup.

Doing the test

Measure carefully and record the results in a table. Repeat the test to check your results. If one result is very different, test it again.

Measuring cylinders let you read the amount of water in millilitres (ml). Read the scale with your eye level with the water.

What did you find?

Draw a bar chart to compare the results. Use your evidence to write a conclusion. Was your prediction right? It is fine if it was not – scientists learn from surprises!
