Grade 3 · Unit 2: Looking after ourselves
A balanced plate keeps you strong and full of energy.

Your diet is all the food and drink you usually have. A healthy diet has foods from all the food groups. We call this a balanced diet.
Imagine your plate split into parts. About half should be fruit and vegetables. A quarter should be carbohydrates, like rice. A quarter should be proteins, like fish or dal.
A portion is the amount you eat at one time. A portion of fruit is about what fits in your hand.
Our bodies are more than half water. We lose water when we sweat and breathe out. Drink clean water many times a day, more in hot weather.
Sweet drinks contain lots of sugar. Water, milk or fresh fruit with no added sugar are better choices.
Rice gives energy. Dal and fish give protein. Shak and other vegetables give vitamins, minerals and fibre.
