Grade 2 · Unit 5: Electricity

Staying safe

Electricity is useful – and it can be dangerous.

A danger sign on a fence: high voltage – keep out!

Mains electricity is dangerous

Mains electricity is very strong. It can give you an electric shock. A shock can badly hurt or even kill.

Signs like this warn people that very strong electricity is inside.

Safety rules

Never put anything into a socket. Never touch a plug or switch with wet hands. Never use a cable that is broken.

Only plugs should go into sockets, and only an adult should plug in big appliances.

Outside

Never fly a kite near power lines. Never touch a fallen wire – tell an adult. Keep away from wires in flood water.

Always fly kites in open spaces, far away from electric wires.

Batteries are safer

Small batteries are safe for experiments. That is why we use them in class. Never cut open a battery.

Batteries in toys and torches are small and safe. Mains electricity is much, much stronger.
