Grade 2 · Unit 5: Electricity

Electricity around us

Fans, lights, phones – what runs on electricity?

A ceiling fan uses electricity to move air and cool a room.

Using electricity

Electricity makes many things work. It runs lights, fans, TVs, fridges and rice cookers. These are appliances.

A fan turns electricity into movement.

From the wall

Power stations make electricity. Wires on tall poles carry it to our homes. We plug appliances into sockets. This is mains electricity.

The wires are high up so that people cannot touch them.

From batteries

A battery stores electricity. Torches, toys, clocks and remote controls use batteries. Phones have batteries we can charge.

When a battery runs out, the device stops working. Some batteries can be charged again.

From the Sun

A solar panel changes sunlight into electricity. Many village homes in Bangladesh have solar panels on the roof.

Solar panels work best on sunny days. Many homes keep the electricity in a battery for the night.
