Grade 2 · Unit 1: Going outside
Forest, river, desert or sea – who lives where?

Our Earth has many different places. There are forests, rivers, deserts, mountains and seas. Each place is an environment.
Some environments are hot and some are cold. Some are wet and some are dry. Living things are suited to where they live.
The place where an animal or plant lives is its habitat. A habitat gives food, water and shelter. Tigers in the Sundarbans hide in the thick mangrove forest.
Tigers are good swimmers. In the Sundarbans they even swim across rivers to find food.
Lotus flowers and fish live in a wetland, like a haor. A desert is very dry. Camels and cactus plants live there. They can live a long time without much water.
In winter, thousands of birds fly to the haors of Bangladesh from colder countries far away.
Your school field is a habitat too. Look under stones and in the grass. You may find ants, worms and snails.
Small animals like beetles, ants and snails like damp, shady places where they can hide.
