Coordinates in four quadrants

Negative coordinates too.

Latitude and longitude

Every place on Earth has coordinates. Dhaka is about 23.8° North, 90.4° East. Maths grids can also go below zero.

Four quadrants

The axes cross at the origin (0, 0). Left of the origin, x is negative. Below it, y is negative. This makes four quadrants.

Plotting points

Always go across (x) first, then up or down (y). (−2, 5): 2 left, 5 up. (5, −3): 5 right, 3 down.

Shapes on a grid

Plot the three corners. A square has equal sides and right angles. The fourth corner is (−2, 1).
