Grade 4 · Unit 3: Money

Money calculations

Bills, best buys and change.

Supermarkets print bills for every customer.

At the supermarket

A bill lists each item, its price and the total. Prices can use decimals: ৳42.50 means 42 taka 50 poisha. We add and subtract money like decimals.

Reading a bill

Cost = quantity × price. 5 × ৳68 = ৳340. Add every cost to find the total: ৳755.

Best buy

Find the unit price to compare. 500 g for ৳90 → ৳18 per 100 g. 200 g for ৳40 → ৳20 per 100 g. The 500 g pack is cheaper per gram.

Change from ৳1000

Count up from the total to the amount paid. 755 → 800 is 45; 800 → 1000 is 200. Change = ৳245.

Profit and loss

A shopkeeper buys a fan for ৳600 and sells it for ৳750. Profit = selling price − cost = ৳150. If it sold for only ৳550, that would be a loss of ৳50.

Currencies

Different countries use different money. $10 is about 10 × ৳120 = ৳1200. If a book costs £5 online, it is about 5 × 160 = ৳800.
