Grade 4 · Unit 1: Number and place value
Divide 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers.

A farmer has 852 mangoes to pack in crates of 6. How many crates? Estimate: 900 ÷ 6 = 150.
Take away 100 sixes (600), leaving 252. Take away 40 sixes (240), leaving 12. Then 2 sixes. 100 + 40 + 2 = 142 crates.
8 ÷ 6 = 1 r 2. Carry 2 to make 25. 25 ÷ 6 = 4 r 1. Carry 1 to make 12. 12 ÷ 6 = 2. Answer: 142.
Sometimes we round up: 9 minibuses so nobody is left behind. Sometimes we round down: 100 eggs make 8 full dozens. Sometimes the remainder is the answer: 4 eggs left over.
Take away big chunks of 16: 20 × 16 = 320. 64 is left: 4 × 16 = 64. 384 ÷ 16 = 24. Division is repeated subtraction!
