Grade 2 · Unit 4: Patterns and algebra

Describing patterns

Say the rule, then predict.

Rickshaw art is full of repeating patterns.

Patterns in art

Rickshaw art has bright repeating patterns. Maths patterns can repeat or grow. To describe a pattern, find its rule.

A growing pattern

This is a growing pattern. Each term is 3 more than the last. So the next term is 16.

Shape patterns that grow

Step 1 has 1 triangle, step 2 has 2. Step 10 will have 10 triangles. Finding the rule helps you predict far ahead.

Patterns on a hundred square

Colour the numbers you say when counting in 5s. They make two straight lines. Every number ends in 5 or 0.

The core of a pattern

The part that repeats is the core: triangle, triangle, square. The same pattern can be shown with letters, sounds or beads: A, A, B. Shrinking patterns go down: 18, 15, 12, 9, 6 – take away 3 each time.
