Grade 1 · Unit 4: Patterns and algebra

Patterns

Find the part that repeats.

Nakshi kantha quilts are stitched with beautiful repeating patterns.

Patterns everywhere

A pattern is something that repeats. Nakshi kantha quilts, rickshaw art and saris have patterns. Can you see the part that repeats?

Shape patterns

This pattern goes triangle, circle, triangle, circle. The part that repeats is “triangle, circle”. We call it the core of the pattern.

What comes next?

Find the core: square, square, circle. Say the pattern out loud to help. Next comes another square.

Make your own

You can make patterns with colours, shapes, sounds and actions. Clap, clap, stamp! Clap, clap, stamp! Tell a friend the rule of your pattern.

Same pattern, new look

red, blue, red, blue … clap, stamp, clap, stamp … A, B, A, B … These are the same pattern in different forms!
