Fractions of a group

Half of 8 mangoes is 4 mangoes.

Half the mangoes

There are 8 mangoes in a basket. Mum gives half of them to Grandma. How many does Grandma get?

Share into 2 groups

To find half, share the group into 2 equal groups. 8 shared into 2 groups is 4 and 4. So half of 8 is 4.

A quarter of a group

To find a quarter of 12, share 12 into 4 equal groups. Each group has 3. So a quarter of 12 is 3.

Doubles and halves

Double 4 is 8, so half of 8 is 4. If you know your doubles, you know your halves!

Fractions of numbers

To find half of 8, share it into 2 equal groups: 4 in each. To find a quarter of 8, share into 4 groups: 2 in each. Three quarters is 3 of those groups: 6.
