Grade 3 · Unit 4: Our five senses

Sight

Your eyes need light to see.

Light goes into the eye through the dark pupil.

How we see

We see when light goes into our eyes. Light from the Sun or a lamp bounces off things and into our eyes. The eye sends a message to the brain, and we see a picture.

Without light, we cannot see anything. That is why it is impossible to see in a completely dark room.

Parts of the eye

The pupil is the black hole where light goes in. The iris is the coloured ring around it – brown, black, blue or green. Eyelids and eyelashes keep out dust and dirt.

In bright light, the iris makes the pupil small to let in less light. In dim light, the pupil gets bigger to let in more light.

Looking after our eyes

Never look straight at the Sun. It can damage your eyes for ever. Wear goggles when there might be dust or sparks. Some people wear glasses to help them see clearly.

Eating carrots, dark green vegetables and fish helps to keep eyes healthy. Rest your eyes by looking away from screens often.

Animal eyes

Owls have huge eyes to see in dim light at night. Eagles can spot a mouse from very high in the sky. Many animals that are hunted, like goats, have eyes on the sides of their heads to see all around.
