Grade 2 · Unit 4: Light and dark
What happens when there is no light at all?

We see things when light goes into our eyes. In complete darkness there is no light. So we cannot see anything at all!
Explorers carry torches and lamps because their eyes cannot see without light.
At night it is dark because the Sun is not shining on our side of the Earth. Moonlight and stars give a little light.
In cities, bright street lights make it hard to see the stars.
Owls and cats have big eyes. They see in very dim light. Bats use sound to find their way. But no animal can see in total darkness.
Owls also have amazing hearing. They can find a mouse in the dark just by listening.
On dark roads, drivers may not see you. Wear light colours and a reflector. Carry a torch.
Reflective strips bounce car headlights straight back to the driver.
