Grade 2 · Unit 2: Looking at rocks
From roads to temples – rocks are useful!

People use rocks to build and make things. We choose a rock by what it is like. Hard, strong rocks are good for roads and buildings.
Big machines cut and crush the rock in a quarry so it can be used for building.
Granite is very hard and strong. Crushed stone is used under roads and in concrete for bridges. Marble is polished for floors and statues.
Marble can be cut and polished until it is very smooth and shiny.
Chalk is soft. It leaves a white mark. Slate splits into thin sheets. Long ago children wrote on slates.
Chalk is made from the tiny shells of sea creatures that lived long, long ago.
Bangladesh has lots of clay and little stone. So we bake clay in kilns to make bricks. Clay is also used for pots and terracotta art.
Baking makes the soft clay hard and strong. That is why bricks can hold up buildings.
